Message Generally, 17" wheels and tires are much cheaper, though you have more tire options for 18s. Most manufacturers design and optimize performance tires in 18" sizes, so everything else scaled back for 17s. Both can "fill the wheel well" with the right tire, though the 17" tire will have more sidewall to fill the same amount as an 18" wheel. For example, a 275/40/17 is 25.7" tall, so 8.7" of it is sidewall. A 285/35/18 is 25.8" tall, so only 7.8" of it are sidewall.
